Sounders
BURNABY, B.C. The Seattle Sounders scored early in the second half and held on to defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 in an A-League match yesterday at Swangard Stadium. Sounders forward Welton scored his ninth goal of the year to give the visiting side its 11th win of the season. The winner came in the 57th minute when Sean Michael Callahan left-footed a pass through the 6-yard box, where Welton one-timed a right-footed volley past a diving Alex Marques. Sounders midfielder Jason Farrell saw his first action since a July 10 Qwest Field match against Vancouver (12-8-5). After suffering a severely sprained right ankle, the Sounders' captain played a defensive-midfield role. Sounders keeper Preston Burpo earned his eighth shutout of the season. The win gives the Sounders (11-10-4) 37 points in the Western Conference tied with Minnesota for third place. Four teams from the conference will make the playoffs.
