Ex-Sonics might become Energy, Thunder or Wind
The NBA filed for trademark rights to these six nicknames for the Oklahoma City franchise — Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.
Namecalling
OKLAHOMA CITY — Pick your poison, Sonics fans.
What should the NBA team that Clay Bennett moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City be called?
The NBA filed for trademark rights to these six nicknames for the Oklahoma City franchise — Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.
No Outlaws, Tumbleweeds, Rustlers, Stealers, Carpetbaggers and Criminals on the list.
An attorney for the NBA made the filing Monday with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The filing is listed on the patent office's Web site.
The NBA and the team have declined to discuss possible new names for the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics ahead of an official announcement, which has not yet been scheduled.
Bennett's team will play the 2008-09 season in Oklahoma City after agreeing to pay the city of Seattle at least $45 million to break the final two years of a KeyArena lease.
