Utah Jazz executive Troy Weaver named Sonics assistant GM

Troy Weaver, a front-office executive with the Utah Jazz, was named Thursday to fill the Sonics' vacant assistant general manager position.

Weaver joined Utah in 2003 as a head scout and spent the past season as director of player personnel. He built a reputation as a keen talent evaluator and was instrumental in the Jazz drafting guards Deron Williams, C.J. Miles and Ronnie Brewer and forward Paul Millsap.

Weaver replaces Scott Perry, who spent one season with the Sonics before returning to Detroit as vice president of basketball operations. Sonics assistant GM Rich Cho is expected to retain his role as salary-cap specialist.

Weaver, who earned an associate's degree at Prince George's (Md.) Community College, has ties to Sonics rookie Kevin Durant and Jeff Green. He coached AAU basketball in the Washington, D.C., area where Durant played, and recruited Green when he was an assistant at Syracuse.

Notes

• Durant and Cho will represent the Sonics at the May 20 draft lottery. Seattle finished with the second-worst record in the NBA. The Sonics have a 19.9 percent chance of landing the top pick and an 18.8 chance of getting the second pick. The team can select no lower than fifth in the June 26 draft.

• The Sonics will hold a predraft minicamp beginning May 15.
