NBA Notebook | Chris Webber's comeback, career ends

PREV  of  NEXT

Chris Webber was the NBA's No. 1 draft pick in 1993.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Chris Webber is ending his comeback attempt with the Golden State Warriors and will retire after 15 seasons in the NBA.

Warriors spokesman Raymond Ridder said Webber will make the announcement at a news conference today. The news was first reported Tuesday by ESPN.com.

Webber played only nine games with the Warriors before being sidelined by a left knee that has hampered him in recent years.

Webber was the most prominent member of the Fab Five at Michigan and played for Golden State, Washington, Sacramento, Philadelphia and Detroit in his NBA career.

Webber and the Warriors hoped that a return to the spot he started his NBA career would help both parties. But he ended up having little impact on the Warriors after signing with the team Jan. 29.

Slowed by the knee injuries, Webber struggled to keep up with the fast-paced Warriors and averaged 3.9 points in his brief stint with the team. He had not played since March 2 because of the injured left knee and had not been around the team as of late.

Pacers say Walsh hasn't

agreed to run Knicks

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers insist Donnie Walsh has not agreed to oversee basketball operations for the New York Knicks after the season.

"Donnie said this morning there's nothing clear about his future," Pacers spokesman David Benner said. "When there is he'll make a statement. He hasn't agreed to anything with anybody."

Walsh, the Pacers' chief executive and president since 1988, said Monday he would step aside after this season, but he would not comment on his future. The Pacers have turned over operation of the troubled franchise to Hall of Famer Larry Bird.

Shaquille O'Neal, acquired by Phoenix in a February trade, visited the Tempe, Ariz., police station March 20 and filled out an application to be a volunteer, department spokeswoman Sgt. Cindy Davies said.

Davies added that she didn't know if the Suns center planned to start volunteering during the basketball season or why he chose Tempe.

O'Neal previously served as a reserve officer with the Miami Beach Police Department while with the Heat.

"Certainly we're very grateful he's going to be volunteering and giving back to the community," Davies said. "It's fantastic for such a leader like him."

• Cleveland Cavaliers C Ben Wallace will likely miss today's game against the New Orleans Hornets because of back spasms he has had the past two weeks.
