Bryant, Brooks set to join Sonics staff

Seattle Times staff reporter

Coaching the USA Men's Select Team for the past week has forced Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo to juggle his duties with his new team while preparing Team USA for the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which begins today.

Upon returning to Seattle, one of Carlesimo's top priorities is finalizing the coaching staff. According to several NBA sources, former Sacramento assistant Scott Brooks and former Orlando assistant Mark Bryant have accepted offers to join the Sonics coaching staff.

On Tuesday, Carlesimo declined to comment on the new hires until the team makes an official announcement, which is expected this week.

Brooks, 42, spent last season with the Kings and had been with the Denver Nuggets for the previous three seasons. He was one of at least four candidates who interviewed for Seattle's head-coaching job. Brooks had an 11-year NBA playing career.

Bryant, 42, coached for the Magic last season. He played for 10 NBA teams during a 15-year career.

The Sonics may retain Ralph Lewis, who has coached with Seattle for the past two seasons and was co-head coach of its summer league team.
