As expected, Sonics owner Clay Bennett decided to clean house and will not retain coach Bob Hill. He also has re-assigned general manager Rick Sund, who has a year remaining on his contract. Sund will serve as a consultant.
Sonics vice chairman Lenny Wilkens, was believed to be the leading candidates for either the general manager or head coaching position. But Bennett said in a statement that he and Wilkens will lead the search for a new coach and general manager.
Hill guided the Sonics to an injury-plagued 31-51 record this season. Since taking over midway in the 2005-06 season, he compiled a 53-81 record.
"While there is uncertainty as the local future physical location of our franchise, our commitment to creating a culture of competitive excellence for this organization is unwavering," Bennett said. "We absolutely aspire to win championships."
