Blocking the 7-foot-6 Yao Ming? Unreal.
Attempting an in-game circus dunk on a breakaway? Say Wa?
There was little state pride when former Washington star Nate Robinson attempted a move more fitting for his defense of the slam-dunk title than keeping his New York Knicks ahead of Cleveland on Wednesday.
The 5-9 Robinson retrieved the ball and headed down court for what appeared to be an easy layin or maybe a standard jam. Instead he bounced the ball hard off the court, shuffled three steps and missed a dunk attempt. Robinson was whistled for traveling, however, before the feat was complete.
The Knicks still won 101-98, but coach Isiah Thomas was embarrassed by Robinson, who finished with five points on 2-for-5 shooting in 19 minutes. He's averaging 5.0 points in his past three games.
Robinson, who's known for his athleticism, was more blasé about the snafu. When asked what he was thinking, he replied, "I was trying to dunk it. What did it look like? It was a dunk," to New York reporters. He added he wouldn't try it again — unless maybe his team was up 20 points.
FYI, Nate: No matter the score, it'll always be ruled a travel, so save it for Las Vegas.
