NBA notebook: N.Y. Knicks waiting for Curry, test results

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The New York Knicks were waiting for center Eddy Curry to report to training camp, along with test results on the irregular heartbeat that prompted Chicago to trade him.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas and coach Larry Brown had hoped Curry would make it to the College of Charleston yesterday, but by late afternoon, a team spokesman said Curry likely would not join the team until today.

Until then, the team would not reveal anything about the 22-year-old's health status.

"When it happens, it happens," Brown said of Curry's arrival. "It's the second day, so I don't think it's critical."

Curry, the Bulls' leading scorer last season at 16.1 points per game, missed Chicago's final 13 games and the playoffs after the condition was diagnosed.

Chicago didn't want to part with Curry, but team officials demanded he take a DNA test to find out whether he's susceptible to cardiomyopathy, the ailment that killed former Boston Celtics guard Reggie Lewis and Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers. But Curry refused, saying the test violated his privacy.

Thomas had said the Knicks couldn't demand a DNA test because of New York's privacy and employment laws, but that doctors examining Curry would find any potential problems.

If Curry plays, he'll join six-year NBA veteran Jerome James and rookie Channing Frye in the Knicks' revamped front-court rotation.

James, who signed as a free agent in August after spending the past four seasons with the Sonics, was not bothered by the possibility that Curry might cut into his playing time.

"I'm 29," James said. "I lost my ego somewhere around my fifth season."

Notes

• Detroit Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose particles in his left ankle. No timetable has been set for his return.

• The Clippers waived point guard Frank Williams and signed free-agent forward Rodney White.

White averaged 5.1 points last season for Denver and Golden State. Williams averaged 2.9 points and 1.9 assists in his first three NBA seasons after being drafted 25th overall by Denver in 2002
