Galindo lifts Chivas USA to MLS draw

FRISCO, Texas — Maykel Galindo, a former Seattle Sounders player, scored in the 84th minute to lift Chivas USA to a 1-1 tie with FC Dallas in a Major League Soccer match Sunday.

Galindo, who entered the match in the 55th minute as a substitute for forward Atiba Harris, fired a shot from 17 yards that went through the legs of FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala and into the center of the net.

Galindo played a loose ball that bounced off the leg of FC Dallas defender Duilio Davino and fired a shot from near the top of the penalty box for an unassisted goal.

Chivas USA's Justin Braun had a chance to score in second-half stoppage time, but his header drifted wide right of the net in the 91st minute.

Sala finished with eight saves. Brad Guzan had four saves for Chivas USA in the MLS regular-season opener for both teams.

Chivas USA outshot FC Dallas 22-8 for the match and 18-4 in the second half.

Juan Toja scored for FC Dallas in the 21st minute. Abe Thompson tapped a pass between two defenders to Toja, who took possession of the ball with his left foot before curling a shot from outside the top left corner of the goal box and into the right corner of the net.

Chivas USA captain Claudio Suarez missed the match to be with his family in Mexico after his father died Friday morning because of heart failure. Chivas players wore black armbands for the match.

Liverpool, Chelsea triumph

LONDON — Liverpool took control of the fight for fourth place in the English Premier League with a 1-0 victory over rival Everton.

While Chelsea advanced to second place after a 1-0 victory over visiting Middlesbrough, Liverpool moved five points ahead of its neighbor through Fernando Torres' 28th goal of the season.

The Spanish striker scored in the seventh minute at Anfield to lift the Reds to 62 points from 31 matches, with Everton back in fifth and struggling to clinch a UEFA Champions League qualifying spot.

Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho scored in the sixth minute to lift the Blues above Arsenal. Chelsea has 71 points, five fewer than league leader Manchester United and one more than Arsenal.

Newcastle seemingly ended any danger of relegation with a surprise 4-1 win at Tottenham.
