Mexico's Maria de Jesus Castillo, right, heads the ball against American Abby Wambach during the first half of their exhibition game in Portland. Wambach scored one goal.

PORTLAND — Kristine Lilly scored at the end of the first half and the United States women's team went on to beat Mexico 4-0 in a chilly and damp exhibition game Wednesday night.

Abby Wambach, honored before the game for her 100th cap, added a goal in the 76th minute off an assist from Lindsay Tarpley. Not long after, Natasha Kai added a goal, and Carli Lloyd scored in the final minutes.

"This is what this tour's all about, for the fans," Wambach said. "We didn't do what we wanted to do in China, but we're going to turn it around."

Nicole Barnhart was in goal for the U.S., which lost in the World Cup in China amid a goalie controversy. It was Barnhart's first start this year.

It was the second of three season-ending exhibition games with Mexico, with the final match Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.

U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo, the former Washington Huskies standout from Richland at the center of the goalie controversy, again watched the game in street clothes.

Barnhart went largely unchallenged against Mexico, but she made a diving catch late in the second half to stop Evelyn Lopez's shot from out front.

Temperatures were in the low 40s and the turf was soggy from periodic showers during the day.

U.S. defender Tina Ellertson, a former Husky from nearby Vancouver, Wash., had to be helped off the field in the first half because of a quadriceps injury. She said she wished she could have played more.

"My P.E. teacher was here from like, third grade," she said.

U.S. men get rare

win in Europe

BASEL, Switzerland — Michael Bradley stopped the longest U.S. losing streak in 13 years and gave the Americans a rare victory in Europe.

Bradley scored his first international goal in the 86th minute and the United States beat Switzerland 1-0 in a sloppy game played in the rain.

After a 10-0-1 start under coach Bob Bradley (Michael's father), the United States had lost to Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia, Sweden and Brazil, its first five-game skid since 1994. The Americans are just 3-14-3 in Europe since a victory at Austria in April 1998, beating Poland twice and now Switzerland.

"We need these kind of games," said Bob Bradley. "The credit goes to the team for sticking together, being organized and not giving too much away and finding a way to win the game."

Notes

David Beckham will be available to play in the Los Angeles Galaxy's home game against New York tonight. Beckham has been out of action since Aug. 29 with a sprained right knee.

• England wasted a second-half lead in a 2-1 loss at Russia, jeopardizing its chances of making next year's European Championship.

Defending champion Greece, the Czech Republic and Romania clinched berths with victories, while Scotland's bid was damaged with a 2-0 loss at Georgia. Germany secured a spot last weekend, becoming the first nation to join co-hosts Austria and Switzerland.

Thierry Henry scored twice to break Michel Platini's French national-team scoring record in a 2-0 qualifying victory over Lithuania.

Brazil beat Ecuador 5-0 in Brazil's first home game in two years. Kaka scored twice. Colombia tied 0-0 at Bolivia, Chile defeated visiting Peru 2-0, and Paraguay beat visiting Uruguay 1-0.
