Sounders take title with shutout win

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Seattle Sounders clinched the USL First Division regular season title Sunday afternoon in Minnesota with their ninth 1-0 victory of the season.

The win means the Sounders will face the expansion Carolina Railhawks in the first round of the playoffs; the first leg is Friday night in North Carolina, and the Sounders host Sept. 16 at Qwest Field.

Leighton O'Brien, taking advantage of a Thunders defense miscue, tallied the match's only goal in the 18th minute. It was his second of the year in league play.

Goalkeeper Chris Eylander earned his 14th win and 13th shutout of the season.

Kickoff for the Sept. 16 match at Qwest Field is 6 p.m.; tickets are available 10 a.m. Monday through SeattleSounders.net or 206-622-3415.
