Sounders derail Miami

Special to The Seattle Times

Those who came to see the world's second-leading goal scorer of all time, Romario, do his thing left disappointed.

However, that meant the Seattle Sounders went home happy, thanks to two guys who just started scoring goals.

Rookie Jordan Harvey scored his first professional goal and C.J. Klaas tallied his first goal of the season as the Sounders beat Romario's Miami FC club 2-1 on Saturday night in a United Soccer Leagues First Division match before 3,006 fans at Qwest Field.

"We just watched [Romario] a little tighter than the last game," Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said after reversing an early defeat to the expansion Miami club. "We were a little more physical. We just made a mental note of where he was. The guy wasn't going to run past us, because he's lost a step."

Seattle avenged a 5-3 loss at Miami FC on June 18 when Romario, 40, tallied three goals, including the game-winner in the 88th minute.

The Sounders (5-7-4, 19 points) built a 2-0 lead and survived a late Miami FC flurry of shots. Seattle ran its unbeaten streak to four matches, leapfrogging Miami FC (4-4-5, 17 points) into sixth place in the First Division.

Harvey and defender Stephen Keel both return to the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer after joining the Sounders on loan June 16.

Harvey scored his first professional goal for a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. He knocked in a left-footed shot at the open left post from about 8 yards out after goalkeeper Chris Doyle just missed catching a cross from Andrew Gregor.

"That goal was probably the easiest goal of my playing career, because everybody fell down in the goal," Harvey said.

Klaas gave the Sounders a 2-0 lead when he chipped a short shot over the head of Doyle into the left corner from the right post in the 42nd minute. Klaas' first goal of the season was set up by a run up the right side by Roger Levesque.

Seattle outshot Miami FC 7-4 in the first half, but the visitors finished with a 12-11 advantage.

Mario Rodriguez scored in the 81st minute for Miami FC.

Romario, who led Brazil to a World Cup title in 1994, took one shot in the first half and stood around waiting for the ball much of the time.

Second to Pele with 974 goals, Romario showed his age until late in the match. He missed a 17-yard blast just over the crossbar during added time, one of two shots in the second half.
