Marysville

Prompted by a student walkout protesting a lack of discipline at Totem Middle School last month, the Marysville School District said it will work to improve student behavior at its middle schools.

The district said it will take several actions, including training staff, partnering with local police and better advertising of a tip line for students to report safety concerns anonymously.

In the future, the district said, it wants to work on a more consistent discipline system, identify and meet with students who frequently misbehave to prevent harassment and bullying, and have police officers present anti-graffiti programs in middle schools.

At a forum held last month, students told district officials about violence, fighting, bullying and intimidation.

Campus wins prize

for wetlands

The joint Cascadia Community College and University of Washington, Bothell campus received national recognition this month for its 58-acre urban-wetlands-restoration project.

The campus won the habitat-restoration category of a National Wildlife Federation competition called Chill Out: Campus Solutions to Global Warming.

The campus-restoration project, which began when the schools opened 10 years ago, turned a former farm into an ecosystem for fish, birds, insects and plants. Pesticides have been banned from campus, storm runoff is controlled and the use of landscaping equipment limited.

The prize for Cascadia and UW Bothell is $1,000.
