Marysville Superintendent Larry Nyland has been named to a state advisory panel to review Washington's K-12 math standards.
The state Board of Education selected 20 educators, parents, mathematicians and business people from around the state. The panel will review work by a private consulting firm hired to bring Washington's math standards into line with those of top-performing states and foreign nations.
The review was prompted by the failure of almost half of 10th-graders to pass the math portion of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning last spring.
Nyland is the only Snohomish County representative on the advisory panel and one of two superintendents, the other being Mike Riley of Bellevue.
The math-standards panel will review recommendations, and the board will hold public hearings around the state in July and August. A final report is due to the board by Aug. 30.
