Fund-raisers to aid crash victim

Times Snohomish County bureau

Marysville

Benefit breakfasts and silent auctions of more than 100 donated items, including a weekend at a ski condo, are planned in Smokey Point on Saturday and Sunday to help a young woman injured in a New Year's Eve traffic accident.

Money from the events is to aid Jesica Aldrete, 27, who has been in a coma since a Dec. 31 crash in Marysville.

Aldrete was the front-seat passenger in a car driven by her fiancé, Fransisco Grimaldo Plasencia. A rear-seat passenger, Miguel Grimaldo Plasencia, Fransisco's brother, died in the crash. Fransisco Plasencia suffered head cuts, was knocked unconscious and has experienced memory loss, according to court records.

Details of the fund-raisers and items to be auctioned are available from Paraiso's Mexican Restaurant, 360-653-6133, and at letshelpjessica.com.

A West Seattle man, Andrew E. Wolfe, 35, has been charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault as a result of the crash. His trial is scheduled April 1.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Dec. 31, after the two brothers and Aldrete closed Paraiso's Mexican Restaurant in Arlington early that night. Aldrete has worked there about four years, said her father, Benjamin Soltero, who also works at the restaurant, which his brother owns.

The crash took place on Smokey Point Boulevard about a mile south of the restaurant.

Charging papers filed in Snohomish County Superior Court describe how a Mercury Cougar driven by Fransisco Plasencia had stopped for traffic ahead. A van driven by Wolfe failed to stop and struck with such force that the Cougar's back-seat area was pushed against the front seat, according to the papers. Miguel Plasencia, 33, died at the scene.

A blood sample obtained from Wolfe put his blood-alcohol reading at 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit for intoxication, according to the charging papers. Wolfe has been held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Aldrete's head struck the windshield frame, and she suffered head injuries and a fractured spine. She is being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle but has not regained consciousness.

Soltero said his daughter has no insurance and estimated her medical bills at more than $250,000. A single mother, she has two children, 10 and 7.

The breakfasts and auctions will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the restaurant, 3611 168th St. N.E.
