Drawn to the water in 2010
Posted by Gabriel Campanario
2010: A look back | Selections from Seattle Sketcher
A healthier Hammering Man. The 20-year-old Troll in Fremont. TV-famous gourmet taco trucks. A community center packed with World Cup fans. I found numerous interesting scenes to draw in 2010, but some stand out as I look back.
On Lake Union, a couple welcomed me into their floating home so I could sketch a view I had seen only in "Sleepless in Seattle."
At the Port of Seattle, I gazed at the water from 100 feet up, standing inside a crane cabin where longshoremen spend hours loading and unloading cargo ships.
A local fisherman taught me the differences between sockeye and king salmon the day I took my sketch pad to the Ballard Locks -- a place I thought only tourists visited.
At Fishermen's Terminal, I met a crab-boat captain about to set sail for Alaska, and at Green Lake I sketched a bike commuter on her way to work.
While on a kayak tour of the Duwamish River, I learned about the fate of the South Park bridge. The now dismantled bridge is still a daily topic of conversation at nearby businesses like Loretta's pub.
I didn't set out to sketch so many boats or water scenes when the year started, but it's no surprise that I was drawn to them. Views of water are always eye-catchers, and Seattle overflows with opportunities to enjoy them.
Sketch-worthy Seattle. Where should I take my sketchpad in 2011? Do you know of a good sketch story waiting to be drawn? I'd love to learn about it. You can send me your suggestions to gcampanario@seattletimes.com or via Facebook or Twitter. Thanks for following Seattle Sketcher. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
