Sketching live on TV with kid reporter Brennan LaBrie

With kid reporters like Brennan LaBrie out there, the future of journalism is in good hands. The 10-year-old from Port Townsend has been producing his own newspaper for two years and has more than 300 paid subscribers. He was also chosen by Time Magazine to be their kid reporter at the Winter Olympics. This morning he added another item to his impressive resume: co-hosting the King5 TV morning show New Day Northwest with Margaret Larson. And I was the lucky guy he got to interview. Here's the eight-minute segment where I did the sketch you see above, minus the color, which I added when I got back to the newspaper.
Here are two more spreads from my pocket sketchbook that I did before being on the show:
The lobby of the TV studios. Interesting building with lots of light. I took a note of the outside sculpture of a family watching TV and just continued on the same page to sketch the lobby since I wasn't sure how long I'd have to wait.
The green room. I waited here before taping the segment and got a chance to meet Jeanette DeGoede, owner of Tulip Town in the Skagit Valley, another guest of the show. We could watch the show on a small TV set before being called in. It's funny they call this room green but it isn't green at all. Producer Kate Huisentruit explained that it's a TV term that probably goes back to some backstage theater room that may have had that color.
It was a fun experience all around and a great opportunity to call attention to sketching as journalism. Thanks to Brennan and to all the team at New Day Northwest!
