A morning walk along the east side of the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop led me to "Good Turn Park" near the I-5 bridge. "Good Turn" is one of more than 35 pocket parks and waterways along the six-mile urban trail, which opened in 2008.

Salaha Warsi, a neighbor who was walking her dogs, Clew and Spook, said these street-end little parks are used all the time. "Some people come to have lunch or to drop their kayaks or to teach their kids how to swim in the summer," she said.

From park to park, you can see houseboat neighborhoods, dry docks and float-planes as you walk the trail named after a Duwamish chief who led a village located here.

To add to the experience, the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs put out a call for artists last November to create a new media artwork for the trail.

The idea behind the project is to create a podcast, a cell-phone audio or an interactive project using GPS technology to locate art along the trail. Those are some examples given by Vaughn Bell, art and enhancements project manager with the Seattle Department of Transportation. "It's an opportunity for an artist to create an experience rather than an object," she wrote in an email.

Alexandra Wandesforde-Smith, a third-generation houseboater who was taking a stroll with her 8-month-old twins, thinks a podcast would be a great addition to the loop. "There's tons of history with the houseboats that I can see people listening to as they walk around the neighborhood," she said.

I wouldn't know where to start with a project like that, but I love the idea and can't wait to see this project unfold. The deadline to submit proposals is January 12.
