Bellevue's Coinstar to remove Brittany Murphy poster from Redbox kiosks
Posted by Amy Martinez
As first reported by TMZ, Redbox is removing DVD cover art featuring a lifeless-looking Brittany Murphy from its movie-rental kiosks after the 32-year-old actress was found dead at her Los Angeles home over the weekend.
Bellevue-based Coinstar, which owns Redbox, said removing the images from more than 19,000 kiosks nationwide will take about a week. The cover art features Murphy in one of her last films, the psychological thriller "Deadline," lying naked in a bathtub.
Murphy's mother reportedly found her unconscious Sunday morning in the shower, and attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
Redbox kiosks began carrying "Deadline" on Dec. 1.
The company released this statement from Senior VP of Marketing Gary Cohen:
"Redbox feels removing the 'Deadline' box art is the appropriate course of action following the star's recent death. We will continue to carry her film, but will remove the film's box art from our displays."
