Online shopping drops on Thanksgiving, day after, says Experian Hitwise
Posted by Melissa Allison
Thanksgiving is typically a big day for online shopping, but this year the number of U.S. visits to the 500 largest retailing web sites fell 15 percent compared to last year, according to Experian Hitwise. The Internet platform company Akamai said global retail traffic peaked around 2 p.m. Eastern time that day at 5.7 million visitors a minute.
For the fifth year in a row, Walmart.com was the most visited site on Thanksgiving, with 15 percent of U.S. visits. Amazon.com was the second most-visited with 12 percent. Next were BestBuy.com (6 percent), Target.com (6 percent) and Sears.com (4 percent).
Amazon.com won the next day with 14 percent of visits, when malls and outlets were jammed and overall retail Web traffic dropped 9 percent.
