Peyton Manning's sizeable shadow

INDIANAPOLIS -- It was more than a metaphor to say that Peyton Manning was looming in the background as Arizona general manager Rod Graves discussed his team's quarterback situation.

There was a big picture of Manning looming directly behind the Cardinals GM as he answered questions at Lucas Oil Stadium. It was kind of appropriate because even as Graves said he was confident in the group of quarterbacks the Cardinals have assembled, he left open the possibility of a change.

And with Manning's future in Indianapolis very much in doubt, where he winds up is one of the biggest sources of speculation here at the combine.

The Cardinals acquired Kevin Kolb last year, but had an injury-riddled season and John Skelton showed promise as his replacement.

"We're preparing as if that will be the group," Graves said. "And we'll see what other opportunities present themselves."

The Cardinals have a $7 million bonus payment coming up to Kolb, so there is an escape hatch of sorts and creating some discussion that perhaps Arizona will be a consideration should Manning become available.
