The release of Colin Cole was the biggest surprise of Seattle's releases to reach the regular-season limit of 53 players. His departure is not entirely a shock. Brandon Mebane had moved over to nosetackle, the position where Cole started 26 games the past two seasons, and Cole's contract called for him to make $3.75 million.
Cole had not practiced since training camp opened, though, and most expected he would begin the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Instead, he was released.
Surprise No. 2? Mike Gibson, who had been the backup center in training camp, was let go and Lemuel Jeanpierre was on the 53-man roster.
The departure of Cole and Gibson leaves Seattle with 14 players who were on the roster when Pete Carroll took over as Seahawks coach. Four of those players are not on the 53-man roster. John Carlson is on injured reserve, and Cameron Morrah, Deon Butler and Roy Lewis are all on PUP.
Two Three undrafted rookies made the team: safety Jeron Johnson, receiver Doug Baldwin and quarterback Josh Portis. One of the team's nine draft choices was cut: safety Mark LeGree of Appalachian State, who was beaten out by Johnson.
