Inside the numbers: Darrell Bevell
Posted by Danny O'Neil
So where does that leave their old offensive coordinator -- Darrell Bevell?
Well, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier indicated that something "worked out," according to Tom Pelissero, reporter for 1500ESPN.com in the Twin Cities.
Bevell was in Seattle Wednesday, interviewing with the Seahawks. Bevell's agent has not returned multiple messages, and the Seahawks have not indicated any pending deal, but that wouldn't be a shock at this point.
So what would the Seahwaks be getting should they hire Bevell? (Well, what other than the fourth offensive coordinator in four years?)
It's someone who is not only from the West Coast offense, but he's from Mike Holmgren's branch of that offense.
In fact, the "West Coast offense" has become almost too generic to be specific any more. After all, Greg Knapp ran a version of it in 2009 and Jeremy Bates used it, too.
But those two coordinators became coaches under Mike Shanahan, who in many ways had an entirely separate lineage.
Bevell spent five seasons on the Green Bay Packers staff, serving under Mike Sherman, who had worked direclty under Holmgren. Then in 2006, he went to Minnesota where he worked under Brad Childress, whose coaching background was under Andy Reid -- another direct coaching descendent of Holmgren.
While Hasselbeck didn't work under Bevell in Green Bay, he would bring the same background, putting Hasselbeck closer to the offensive scheme he used under Holmgren for his first eight years with the Seahawks than at any point in the past two seasons.
