Matt Hasselbeck out for Sunday's game, Charlie Whitehurst to start
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Backup Charlie Whitehurst will start his first NFL game.
Hasselbeck has not been cleared to play, coach Pete Carroll said.
"He needs another week to get right," Carroll said before Thursday's practice. "We need to do this to protect him and take care of him."
The decision was made Thursday Whitehurst would start. He was informed by quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch, but Whitehurst said he had the sense for a couple days that this would be the situation.
"I plan on going out there and executing and helping this team win," Whitehurst said before Thursday's practice.
A third-round pick out of Clemon in 2006, Whitehurst played his first four seasons with San Diego, serving as the Chargers No. 3 quarterback for most of that time. He has not attempted a regular-season pass in the NFL.
A restricted free agent this offseason, Whitehurst was acquired by Seattle in the offseason. The Seahawks gave up a third-round pick and swapping spots in the second round with the Chargers to sign Whitehurst to a two-year contract.
This will be an opportunity.
"You expect to play every week," Whitehurst said. "And this week, I maybe expected to start a little more than weeks past for sure. I have been preparing since after the game (in Oakland) to start this game. I'll be ready to go."
Hasselbeck last missed a game because of injury in September 2009. He sat out two games after suffering two broken ribs in the first half of a loss at San Francisco.
Whitehurst said he's not nervous right now, more excited for the opportunity.
"It's exciting," Whitehurst said. "It does kind of sneak up on you, but luckily I've been preparing like this, not just this year, but years past. I feel like I'm ready to go. I plan to go out there and play well."
Here's Seattle's history when Matt Hasselbeck is out with an injury:
