Matt Hasselbeck on ref Bill Leavy: "(He's) a stand-up guy."
Posted by Percy Allen
Bill Leavy the referee who admitted he made officiating mistakes in Super Bowl XL, worked practice again this morning with his crew.
The fallout from his unexpected admission reverberated around practice. Some team officials commended Leavy for his comments while others had no opinion.
Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said he's not entirely over the 21-10 defeat to Pittsburgh, but he sounded as if he had no harsh feelings against Leavy.
(What do you make of Leavy's comments?) "I think all of the officials we have in the NFL are stand-up guys and Leavy is no different. We didn't have him for a long time. I think once coach (Mike) Holmgren left we finally got him for a game. And we had him for an official for the San Francisco game last year and he came up to me and we talked. It's a game. It's not a perfect science. There's a lot of human involvement there. I played some games that I remember because I felt like I did a good job and I played some games where I had some regrets. That goes for any sport, any player. I'm sure coaching is no different and in that same way I'm sure officiating is the same thing."
(Does it make it any easier to hear Leavy's comments?) "We lost the game. Like I said Bill Leavy like all of our officials is a stand-up guy. It's a long time ago. We lost the game. And I don't know."
(Are you surprised he brought it up?) "No. It was probably a good thing that we talked because like Seahawks fan, I myself have had to sort of get to the point where I could kind of get past everything. And he's a great guy. He's actually a really, really good official. It's just one of those things where like I said sometimes you don't have your best days as a player and it's the same thing as a coach. The different thing about this week though is it wasn't like he was just doing the game. Him and his crew are here and they spent time with us and they're the guys that we're supposed to talk to and ask about the new rules emphasis and the new rule changes and those kinds of things. And this group is very, very helpful. So you really got to spend time with them, have lunch with them and all that kind of stuff."
(How long did it take you to get over the Super Bowl loss?) "I'm still a little bit upset about losing my high school state championship game. There's just some games you're never going to forget so put it on the list."
