Seahawks release safety Deon Grant

The Seattle Seahawks have released safety Deon Grant, who has been a starter the previous three seasons.
Grant turned 31 on Sunday, and he was in Hawaii attending the NFL Players Association meetings on Maui as one of the Seahawks' representatives.
Grant has been a defensive captain for the Seahawks, and reached by phone after the announcement, he was very professional though he did say that this was a move he didn't necessarily see coming.
"No, not really," Grant said. "Not really. I just got the phone call the other day."
Grant is 31 and was scheduled to make $4 million next season.
Grant said he felt the defense was just coming together toward the end of last season, and said he was disappointed he wouldn't be able to continue that.
"Definitely started feeling one another," Grant said. "We really didn't get a chance to see it through."
Grant played three seasons for Seattle after being signed in 2007, one of the signature free-agent additions that season along with defensive end Patrick Kerney.
"Me being in it for a minute, you do know that it's a business," Grant said. "I don't have anything bad to say about them. They gave me the opportunity to come and continue my career."
• Also, defensive end Darryl Tapp has signed his one-year tender with the Seahawks. Tapp was a restricted free agent, and his signing the tender ends any suspense in that regard.
Tapp is someone the new coaching staff has clearly identified as a pass rusher who has big things in store. The fact that he signed the qualifying offer signifies his desire to be involved in the offseason preparation from the beginning.
