Report: Seattle considering signing Brandon Marshall?

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Seattle is reporting that Seattle is interested in receiver and Brandon Marshall and considering signing him to an offer sheet, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Now, Seattle may very well be talking to him about a contract, but it's hard to believe that Seattle would sign him to an offer sheet. If Denver chose not to match that offer sheet the Broncos would receive the No. 6 overall pick from compensation. Not No. 14 -- the pick previously belong to Denver -- but No. 6, Seattle's own pick.

Now, Seattle's interest in Marshall makes sense from a roster standpoint. Giving up the No. 6 pick for the right to pay Marshall that contract.

Update: Schefter has reported Marshall is scheduled to visit Seatlte. I have no independent confirmation of that, a message to Marshall's agent has not been returned, but it's becoming clearer that Marshall is a target for Seattle.

But there are two things that must be worked out here:

1) A framework for a contract between Marshall and the Seahawks.

2) An agreement on what Seattle will give Denver for the right to sign him unless the Seahawks are truly willing to give up the No. 6 overall pick to sign him.

As for questions on compensation, my understanding is it's not a first-round pick given up for the right to sign a free agent who received a first-round tender, but it's your first-round pick. I'm waiting for further clarification on that, but when the Broncos applied the first-round tender to Marshall one of the initial things that became clear was that it became very difficult for the Bears to sign him because they didn't have a first-round pick, and you not only have to have a first-round pick, but it must by your first-round pick.

Update, 1:10 p.m.: That is correct, it is Seattle's No. 6 pick that would be the compensation for signing Marshall to an offer sheet Seattle did not match.
