Top defensive tackle prospect is the real McCoy

Posted by Danny O'Neil

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gerald McCoy has been big ever since he was little.

At the age of 12, he weighed 238 pounds.

That doesn't mean it was easy to reach this point as he pointed out he's overcome a lot, coming out of a public high school in southeast Oklahoma City where the field was surrounded by a dirt track and the goal post was crooked.

Any chip was noticably absent from his shoulder. While McCoy is regarded as a defensive tackle who could potentially be the top pick in the draft, there won't be any hard feelings if Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska is picked first.

"No rivalry," he said, pointing out the two are friends who exchange text messages.

And if the Rams were to choose Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford?

"If Sam gets it, I'm going to stand up and clap like I'm his pops," McCoy said.

And if McCoy were to be chosen No. 1, he was asked how he would handle becoming the face of the franchise. He said he didn't think he would be the face of the franchise, just a new player coming in to improve the team.

"I do have a good smile, though," he said.

Then he flashed that smile, and yes he certainly did. McCoy figures to be chosen well before the Seahawks pick at No. 6, but if he were there, Seattle would be getting a player with the personality to match his sterling draft stock.
