Rush to improvement
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Rewind two years when Jeremy Bates was coaching Denver's quarterbacks under Mike Shanahan and coordinating the passing game, which meant calling all the pass plays except for fourth-down attempts.
The Broncos threw about 60 percent of the time that year, and Jay Cutler played his way to the Pro Bowl. So when Bates says the Seahawks' offense is going to look a lot like Denver, is that what to expect?
Nope. Bates said he believes in balance, going so far as to cite 50-50 distribution. That run-pass ratio in Denver in 2008 was the result of personnel more than preference. Specifically, Denver was stocked with talent at receiver and tight end while Denver was down to its fourth and fifth running backs at times.
So what should you expect this season in Seattle?
| Before Gibbs | ||||
| Rush yds. | NFL rank | Rush yds. | NFL rank | |
| Texans (2008-2009) | 115.4 | 13 | 99.1 | 22 |
| Falcons (2004-2006) | 167 | 1 | 121.8 | 14 |
| Broncos (1995-2003) | 124.7 | 5 | 91.9 | 23 |
Well, expect improvement in the ground game with the addition of Alex Gibbs as offensive line coach. Here's a look at how Gibbs' impacted the rushing fortunes of his last three NFL employers in his first season on the job:
