Wednesday afternoon notebook: Riley Cooper stands out

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Florida wide receiver Riley Cooper was not on my list of players I wanted to scrutinize when I arrived in Mobile, Al. He is now.

Cooper has excelled at the Senior Bowl and talking to both scouts and draft analysts like Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com, Cooper is someone who's stock as risen over the course of this season. There's never been a doubt about his quickness, but this season, he showed an ability to use his body to shield defenders.

His hands stood out. He had a slick one-handed grab on Monday and on Wednesday, he caught a ball near the sidelines, deadening it first with his big left paw and then catching it.

Cooper was a top baseball prospect, too, and he was drafted by the Texas Rangers and even signed a contract. He was to receive part of his signing bonus in January if he chose baseball. Instead, he'll be opting for the NFL. The expectation is he will be a second or a third-round draft choice.

  • "The single most impressive physical display of the South team practice on afternoon practice came from George Selvie, the defensive end from South Florida. He bull-rushed Tennessee tackle Chris Scott, actually knocking Scott clean over. Selvie is 6 foot 4, making him fit the bill as that large edge rusher. Brandon Graham of Michigan has looked good for the North team, but he's not taller than 6 feet 1, and while Alex Carrington of Arkansas State is 6-5, his reached measured at 31 inches, which is considered quite short for his height.

(There was a question disputing his height. I noted down Graham being measured at 6-0.5 on Monday. I just double-checked and Graham measured at 6-1, an inch taller than I initially indicated.)

  • The day wouldn't be complete without a note on Tim Tebow. He was not impressive. That's the nicest way I can say it. I saw him hit one receiver in stride and of his first six snaps in the team 11-on-11 drill, only two were passes. Neither was completed.
