Report: John Schneider picked as new Seahawks GM

Schneider was the Green Bay Packers director of football operations. His selection as Seahawks GM was first reported by ESPN's Len Pasquarelli. The Associated Press has subsequently confirmed the hiring from an NFL official.
No formal announcement of the decision has been made yet, but one is expected.
Schneider is 38, and he worked for the Seahawks in 2000, Mike Holmgren's second year with the franchise.
Schneider's hiring would constitute a minor surprise. Many around the league suspected the GM job would go to Floyd Reese, the former Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans GM who has 20 years of NFL front-office experience and had served as an assistant coach with Pete Carroll for one year with the Minnesota Vikings.

In Seattle, Schneider would replace Tim Ruskell in the personnel department though Ruskell served as president in addition to general manager. Schneider will just be general manager as he enters a revamped organizational structure in which the general manager will report up to CEO Tod Leiweke as will Carroll. The working arrangement has been described as a collaboration, and the Seahawks have not said definitively that the general manager will have final say over all personnel decisions. The Seahawks have, however, indicated Carroll does not have final say in personnel beyond who makes the team on the 53-man roster in September. Theoretically, Leiweke will adjudicate any instance in which the coach and general manager simply can not agree on a personnel move.
Schneider is one of four candidates Seattle interviewed for the position along with Reese, Omar Khan of Pittsburgh and Marc Ross of the New York Giants.
So the next question is what to expect from Schneider. Drawing definitive conclusions on someone who has not held a team's top personnel job is always tricky, but here's a starting point:

But draft record is only part of a GM's responsibility, and the Green Bay Packers have built a reputation for not overspending in free agency. I was going to say "not spending" in free agency, but that wouldn't be accurate. The Packers did go out and sign cornerback Charles Woodson in 2006, but that was later in the signing period. The franchise simply has not gotten into open-market bidding wars compared to the Seahawks who were aggressive in their pursuit of San Diego guard Kris Dielman and Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney in 2007 and then receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh last year.
