Pete Carroll, Live and Uncut: Alex Gibbs

Posted by Danny O'Neil

The Seahawks will be adding Alex Gibbs to the coaching staff, according to a report from Chris Mortensen. Gibbs is a dean of the run game, working with the Broncos when they swapped out 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield as easily as you change tires.

Gibbs has served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in Houston the previous two seasons. He served as a consultant for Jim Mora in Atlanta from 2004 to 2006 and the Falcons led the league in rushing yardage every single year.

Carroll was asked about the report of Gibbs' addition during his introductory press conference.

"I haven't talked to Alex yet today," Carroll said, "but if that comes together, it's going to be one of the great achievements in our early process of putting this thing together. He's a fantastic football coach, and I can't wait to get out of here so I can go call him."

Carroll offered no clarification on his coaching staff, but he made it clear that while the offense will be undergoing a schematic overhaul, a lot of the principles on defense will remain the same.

Monte Kiffin, long-time Tampa Bay defensive coordinator, is an important reference point for Carroll, who worked under Kiffin at the University of Arkansas. Gus Bradley was hired to the Seahawks based largely on Kiffin's reference. He considers Bradley to be an up-and-coming start.

From the college ranks, the expectation in the Pac-10 is that Jeremy Bates (offensive coordinator) and Ken Norton Jr. (linebackers) are certainly coming with Carroll. While there have been reports that Pat Ruel, Trojans offensive line coach, is coming north. However, a source from college-coaching circles said it was just Bates and Norton.

Carroll previously reached out to DeWayne Walker, former UCLA defensive coordinator and current New Mexico State coach, and the source from college-coaching circles said Walker is expected to become the defensive coordinator.

Bruce Feldman of ESPN -- who wrote a totally great book called "The Meat Market" that anyone who likes college football should read -- said he's heard that USC special-teams coordinator Ryan Schneider is heading north.
