Seahawks need to turnover a new leaf
By Danny O'Neil, The Seattle Times

Wednesday discussion: I wanted to try something new on the blog here today, spawned off a comment that Tom Page made in yesterday's discussions regarding what's missing from Seattle's offense.

I want to use that as a launch point for a discussion about what Seattle's offense needs. We'll start with Tom Page's comment. Please continue the discussion in the comments section:

"I disagree with Danny about a lack of a deep threat being at the core of our offensive struggles. We haven't really had an explosive receiver since Joey Gallaway (with all due respect to Koren Robinson). Our deep threat used to be Darrell Jackson for gosh sakes. Our offense was based on execution not explosiveness. I will use Branch as an example since he is kind of a whipping boy these days. Branch is not getting open, you can blame it on not being explosive or you can just identify it for what it is. If they use press coverage on Branch, I have not seen him get open in weeks, the only way he can get open is if the defense gives him a free release. They are throwing all those bubble screens to Branch because he can't get off the line of scrimmage. Branch is not effective.

"Bobby Engram is not explosive, but he gets open. I think you are mixing the idea of a player who is effective versus a deep threat or explosive player. I think it would be great if the team had more explosive down field threats, but I don't think they need that, they need effective players. The year we went to the Superbowl, Joe Jurevicious had 10 touchdowns. Jurevicious would never be described as fast or explosive, but he would be described as effective. Joe knew how to get open. I don't think we need a down field or deep threat necessarily, but we need players that are effective. Unfortunately we have a bunch of players who stink."
