Unconfirmed report regarding Ruskell's future

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Pro Football Weekly is reporting that Seahawks president Tim Ruskell has been told he won't be re-signed at season's end. Here is a link to the report right here.

Here is the first sentence: "Inside sources have told PFW that beleaguered Seahawks GM Tim Ruskell, who is in the final year of his contract, has been told that he will not be re-signed after this season."

There is no indication from the team that there is any validity to this report. There is no byline on the story, no source specified and it was posted at 3:29 p.m. Sunday according to the Web site, which did not designate whether it was Eastern or Pacific. If it was Eastern, it was posted right about the time Seattle was wrapping up its first road win of the season. If it was Pacific, the Seahawks would have been in the air flying home.

It would mean that Ruskell was told of this before at some point in the days or hours before today's game and there is no indication that has happened.

I hesitated to put this blog post up because it is essentially linking to a report and then saying that it does not appear to make sense without debunking it outright. Of course, that's a difficulty with a report like this is that short of a declarative statement from Paul Allen or an extension to Ruskell, it's impossible to say that a decision has been reached on his future.

But I will say that no one in a position to know has given any indication that there is any substance to this report and that something has changed with Ruskell's status. He is still in the last year of a five-year contract.

Update at 3:24 a.m. Pacific: I've had a chance to talk to a few more people, and I haven't talked to a single person who has heard Ruskell was told of his fate after this season. Not only that, but CEO Tod Leiweke -- who was in St. Louis with the team -- didn't fly back with the Seahawks so it's not like there was some post-game summit or discussion on the return flight.

Ruskell's future is obviously an issue front and center facing the franchise. He is nearing the end of his five-year contract with the Seahawks.
