Running game commentary

Posted by Danny O'Neil

The Seahawks announced Hasselbeck's injury: as one to his ribs and his return is doubtful.

Fourth quarter

OK, the 49ers -- on this one drive -- have taken more than 8 minutes off the clock in the final period. Seattle has repeated opportunities to get off the field, and has allowed third-down conversions.

But we're also talking about a defense that is playing David Hawthorne and Will Herring and an offensive line that now consists of Brandon Frye, Rob Sims, Steve Vallos, Max Unger and Ray Willis. Exactly one of those guys was considered a starter over the offseason. So while there's going to be plenty of teeth gnashing and hand wringing by the Seahawks faithful, in some ways it's remarkable that the game is this close.

Third quarter

Big Play Babs is taking a new characterization in this game as Frank Gore just ran 80 yards untouched to score a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.

Gore has 206 yards rushing now, his second 200-plus game in Gore's career. The other was also against Seattle.

Cornerback Josh Wilson has not been on the field for the second half, replaced at left cornerback by Kelly Jennings. Lawyer Milloy played free safety in Seattle's nickel package, Babineaux sliding up to defend the slot receiver in those third-and-long situations.

Wilson has an ankle injury and he won't return.

Second quarter

Injury alert: On second-and-goal, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck scrambled for the goal line. He dove, turned his back and absorbed a hit from middle linebacker Patrick Willis.

Hasselbeck got up jogged toward the sidelines, put both hands to his helmet and as the Seahawks two trainers came toward him, he got wobbly knees. He was held up, placed on his back. He walked off the field after about 2 minutes on the turf and is being walked to the locker room.

Oh yeah, Seattle scored the play after that as Hasselbeck was walking off the field. It was a 1-yard pass from Seneca Wallace to Julius Jones, making the score San Francisco 13, Seattle 10.

Start of the 2nd quarter: San Francisco has 10 points, Seattle has one first down.

The 49ers gained 79 yards on one play and had a 75-yard touchdown return nullified, Seattle has 24 yards of offense.

Second quarter doesn't start out any better. Julius Jones loses 5 yards on a screen pass. How many inches of text are wasted each year talking about how this might be the year the screen pass becomes an offensive staple. Well, so much for that.

Injury update: Sean Locklear has left the game with 11 minutes left in the second quarter. Locklear is having his right leg worked on on the bench. Brandon Frye is now Seattle's left tackle.

Olindo Mare 36 field at 10:04
San Francisco 10, Seattle 3. (Drive: 10 plays, 52 yards, 4:45).

Injury update: Sean Locklear was taken off the field on a cart with 10 minutes left in the first half. It was announced he will not return.

Another week, another sack for Seattle's Lawrence Jackson.

Gore's 79-yard touchdown run was the longest allowed by Seattle since 2006.

Joe Nedney 42 field goal at 2:57
San Francisco 13, Seattle 3 (Drive: 5 plays, 18 yards, 2:09).

San Francisco has gained more than double the yardage of Seattle, the 49ers have twice as many first downs and yet lead by 10 points.

First quarter

Seattle allowed its first sack of the season on its third play of the game when Seattle had a formation with four receivers, one back and gave up a sack.

Seattle punted after three plays.

Tight end Vernon Davis made the early difference for San Francisco, with two first-down receptions.

Joe Nedney 37 field goal at 5:38, San Francisco 3, Seattle 0 (Drive: 13 plays, 55 yards, 8:07).

Of the 13 plays on San Francisco's first drive, seven were runs. Patrick Kerney got his first sack of the season.

On Seattle's second drive, the Seahawks put Seneca Wallace in the game on third-and-2, a running play to Justin Forsett for 4 yards and a first down. Hasselbeck was not on the field for that play.

Lofa Tatupu is out of the game on Seattle's second possession.

Tatupu's absence made a big difference. Running back Frank Gore ran 79 yards fora touchdown, the longest touchdown run of Gore's career. It came right up the middle, and it did not appear he was touched until safety Jordan Babineaux hit him as Gore dove into the end zone.

Injury update: At 1:46, it was announced linebacker Lofa Tatupu has a hamstring injury. His return is questionable.

Wide receiver Ben Obomanu down on punt return, his helmet off about 5 yards away. Glen Coffee penalized for illegal block in the back while cornerback Nate Clements was penalized for a personal foul, but that penalty was declined. Coffee's foul was for a block in the back against Will Herring. The penalties nullified what would have been a 75-yard touchdown return by Allen Rossum.

Seattle had two sacks in the first quarter.
