Practice report

Seattle's regular-season practice protocol is in effect, which means no description of specific plays or personnel moves.

After practice, talking to secondary coach Tim Lewis, he said that Jordan Babineaux had won the starting job at free safety. Lewis also pointed out that Lawyer Milloy was on the field with the first-unit defense for a couple of sequences on Monday, but that was more of a rest thing.

Milloy said he's entering in a back-up role, and compared it to his rookie season in New England in 1996.

"I'm trying to get in and fit in," he said. "If I have to be a backup, that's what I have to do. I'll accept that role. As a backup, you're always pushing to be the starter. It was like that my rookie year and it's going to be like that now."

Wide receiver Deion Branch did not finish the practice, but indicated afterward he was fine and it wasn't any more than regular soreness. Branch has undergone two knee surgeries in the past two years.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh did not practice. He did not practice last Monday or Tuesday, either, and did not dress for the exhibition finale. Coach Jim Mora said last week that general soreness was the reason for his absence.

Other players not practicing: CB Travis Fisher (hamstring), S C.J. Wallace (ribs), C Chris Spencer (quad), LT Walter Jones (knee) and DE Derek Walker (undisclosed). Jones was in the locker room afterward, and he's got a mohawk to fit the rest of the offensive line.
