Thursday's practice report
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Roll call: LB David Hawthorne returned from a sprained medial-collateral ligament in his left knee. He was wearing a brace on his knee, and as coach Jim Mora said Wednesday, he's not ruled out for Saturday's exhibition game at Kansas City. Offensive lineman Cory Withrow was out with an undisclosed injury, and cornerback Travis Fisher watched practice and did not participate. Fisher has an injury to his hamstring.
Just for kicks: T.J. Houshmandzadeh showed a case of happy feet during practice, attempting a field goal or three. Perhaps he watched Wednesday's episode of "Hard Knocks" on HBO where Chad Johnson Ochocinco kicked an extra point and kicked off to begin the second half. Houshmandzadeh has a ways to go to catch-up to Esteban Ochocinco, international footballer.
Watching on the Edge: Edgerrin James didn't do much of anything, just watching the practice. Mora said Wednesday that it will be a game-time decision whether James plays on Saturday in Kansas City.
Catching on: Wide receiver Mike Hass' sure-handed training camp continued. He made a pair of impressive catches during the afternoon's practice. Hass is a candidate in the race for a roster spot at wide receiver. Courtney Taylor and Ben Obomanu seem to be at the top of the list for the fifth and sixth receiver spots. Jordan Kent is also a factor, especially because of the role he played on special teams as a gunner.
Branch-ing out the passing game: The Seahawks made the decision to spotlight T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the passing game last week, which resulted in him starting at flanker, not Deion Branch, while Deon Butler began the game as split end. Houshmandzadeh was the intended target of eight passes, and he caught five of them, including a touchdown reception in the final minute of the first half. Expect to see Seattle spotlight Branch in this game. He was the target of just one pass during Saturday's exhibition game against the Broncos, and has yet to catch a pass in the two exhibition games.
Practice coverage: There was a question asked by tompage on Wednesday concerning the limitations of practice coverage. It's a good question, and one in which there is a fair amount of gray area. The rule is more of a guideline, and there is to be no specific reporting of formations, personnel groupings or practice repetitions. For instance, saying Mike Hass made an impressive catch over the middle is fine. Saying that he was on the field in a three-receiver set during a red-zone drill and dragged across the back of the end zone is not. We are not to count the number of snaps players play or to tabulate the accuracy of kickers on their field-goal attempts in practice.
