Roster breakdown: Offense

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Quarterbacks
Average kept 2002-'08: 2.9

POS.2008'07'06 '05'04'03'02
QB3233333

Pencil them in: Matt Hasselbeck is the starter, barring a lightning strike, which isn't exactly a joke since he has been struck by lightning once (not twice as people are fond of saying). Seneca Wallace is the backup.

Roster hotspot: If Mike Teel can outplay Jeff Rowe in the exhibition games, he'll be the No. 3 quarterback. If not, the Seahawks will hope to get him to the practice squad.

Tailbacks
Average kept from 2002-'08: 3

POS.2008'07'06 '05'04'03'02
RB4333332

Pencil them in: Julius Jones, T.J. Duckett and Justin Forsett are a pretty set as the top three backs, and Forsett has shown signs that he won't just be a return specialist, but could have a chance to get some limited carries.

Roster hotspot: Can Devin Moore play his way into making an exception to the roster trends? Seattle kept four running backs for Week 1 last year, but that's only because Jordan Babineaux and Rocky Bernard were suspended for a game apiece. Standard-operating procedure is for the Seahawks to have three running backs. Moore is an undrafted free agent from Wyoming, whose got the speed to make a difference. Can he block well enough to stay on the team?

Fullbacks
Average kept from 2002-'08: 2.1

POS.2008'07'06 '05'04'03'02
FB2222232

Pencil them in: Owen Schmitt is the starter, Justin Griffith provides the experience. He's played for Greg Knapp in both Atlanta and Oakland so he knows the role the fullback is expected to play.

Longshots: David Kirtman and Dan Curran have previously been to training camp with the Seahawks, they're known commodities, but it would be a major upset if either made the regular-season roster.

Tight end
Average kept from 2002-'08: 3

POS.2008'07'06 '05'04'03'02
TE3333333

Pencil them in: Just as sure as death and taxes, there will be three tight ends on the roster come Sept. 6. John Carlson is not only the starter, but the potential star, and John Owens is the dependable, stout veteran who will be the blocking specialist for two tight-end sets.

Roster hotspot: The battle for the third tight end is worth watching. Joe Newton has spent two years on Seattle's practice squad, he's bigger in training camp, and could play his way onto the team, while rookie Cameron Morrah has shown the receiving chops to play the position, but his unleaded blocking needs to improve.

Wide receiver
Average kept from '02-'08: 5.6

POS.2008'07'06 '05'04'03'02
WR6657645

Pencil them in:T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Deion Branch and Nate Burleson compose the veteran core of the position, and they're safe. Seattle didn't trade away next year's third-round pick to sit Deon Butler on the practice squad so he'll be on the team, too.

Roster hotspot: Given last season's health crisis at the position and the depth at the position in training camp, most expect Seattle to have six receivers on the 53-man roster.

That leaves two spots that six receivers are vying for: Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu, Jordan Kent, Logan Payne, Mike Hass and Michael Bumpus. Every one of them has played in a regular-season game. Each has flaws in his game.

Who gets a roster spot will come down to performance in the exhibition games.

Kent has the height and speed that makes him unique, Taylor has athletic explosion, but neither distinguished himself with early-season opportunities last year. Taylor couldn't catch, and Kent short-circuited on the routes he was supposed to run.

Stay tuned. This is going to be a fun battle to watch.

Offensive line
Average kept: 8.9

POS.2008'07'06 '05'04'03'02
OL9999989

Pencil them in: This is one of the more clear-cut positions barring injury. The first-string line is Walter Jones, Rob Sims, Chris Spencer, Mansfield Wrotto and Sean Locklear. Ray Willis and Max Unger are potential starters, Steve Vallos is a dependable backup center and Kyle Williams is a lineman with the versatility to play guard or center since he played at USC where the Trojans use a similar blocking scheme.

Longshots: Cory Withrow, Grey Ruegamer, Na'Shan Goddard, William Robinson, Andre Ramsey.
