Camp Mora: Day 8
Posted by Danny O'Neil
| SEAHAWKS TRAINING CAMP: Day 9 One practice, No pads, 2 hours, 20 minutes | ||
Some guy named Aaron Curry arrived for practice, jogged out onto the field about 20 minutes after the workout began. He was introduced over the public-address system -- almost like a pro wrestler running toward the ring from the dressing room -- and received a rousing cheer.
That's because Curry was the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, and the last outstanding piece of offseason business. After missing eight days of practice, he signed a six-year contract, and there was much rejoicing among Seahawks fans and front office.
Courtney Taylor is a name that tends to invoke sounds of impatience among Seahawk fans. He was the player predicted to have a breakout season last year only to drop a pass on the Seahawks' second play from scrimmage and never really recover after that.
Well, a year later, you want to know what he looks like? A player poised on the brink of a breakthrough. Sorry for those who had their fill of "Courtney Taylor is going to be good" stories last year, but it's true. He caught two touchdown passes in the team's workout at Husky Stadium on Friday night, and looked great in the one practice the Seahawks had on Saturday. He caught three passes during one-on-one pass coverage drills. He might have been out of bounds on one of them, but he worked free from Kelly Jennings on a subsequent catch and beat Jordan Babineaux deep on another. He topped that off with a leaping catch in the end zone during 11-on-11 drills.
The competition for the fifth and (possibly) sixth wide-receiver spots on the roster is one of the toughest position battles in training camp. Of the quartet quintet of Taylor, Ben Obomanu, Jordan Kent, Logan Payne and Michael Bumpus, it's hard to see more than two of them making the roster.
Over the past seven seasons, Seattle has kept six or more receivers four times. Here's a look at that history:

Spencer's ankle sprained: Center Chris Spencer suffered a sprained ankle during Friday's practice. He did not practice Saturday, but was walking on it and signed autographs for fans. It doesn't appear to be too serious an injury.
Roll call: There were eight players who did not practice: LB Will Herring (groin), CB Marcus Trufant (PUP, back), LB D.D. Lewis (knee), OL Grey Ruegamer (unspecified), T Walter Jones (back), DT Cory Redding (unspecified), Michael Bennett (shoulder) and Spencer (ankle).
Just for kicks: Olindo Mare made two field goals of more than 40 yards in simulations for a game-winning kick.
Max options: Steve Vallos has gotten most of the first-team repetitions at center since Spencer went down with an ankle injury, however, rookie Max Unger was out there with the first team at times during Saturday's practice.
