Camp Mora: August 6
Posted by Danny O'Neil
| SEAHAWKS TRAINING CAMP: Day 7 One practice, Pads, 2 hours, 30 minutes | ||
Names changed, not numbers: One week into training camp, Matt Hasselbeck is getting the idea that T.J. Houshmandzadeh who tends to stand out when it matters most.
"He really shows up in the red zone and he really shows up on third down," Hasselbeck said.
Hmmm, that kind of sounds like the role Bobby Engram played as Hasselbeck's designated security blanket these past few seasons. Turns out that's not the only similarity between the two.
"He didn't change the number," Hasselbeck said.
Sure enough, Houshmandzadeh is wearing the No. 84, which Engram had last season.
The one time the two misfired, Hasselbeck rifled a pass Houshmandzadeh never saw coming, the ball lost in the sun. Safety C.J. Wallace ended up picking it off.
Sign of the times: Defensive end Tyson Jackson agreed to terms on a five-year contract on Thursday, according to KCSP in Kansas City. The details don't appear to be finalized, though that is likely to happen by this weekend. Jackson is the No. 3 overall pick, chosen one spot ahead of where Seattle picked linebacker Aaron Curry. The terms of Jackson's deal should provide a reference point on a 5-year deal since Mark Sanchez, the player chosen after Curry, agreed to a five-year deal with the Jets. Curry has missed seven days of training camp as the sides have been unable to reach an agreement.
Knee-ded rest: Receiver Deion Branch sat out a second consecutive practice, resting a sore knee. Branch sat out the second of Seattle's two practices on Wednesday and missed the only workout on Thursday. The Seahawks have given no indication it's anything other than resting a sore joint, but Branch had surgery to repair a torn ligament early in 2008 and had an arthroscopic procedure to clean out the joint in spring. Branch has missed 13 of Seattle's 32 regular-season games over the past two years because of injury.
Roll call: WR Billy McMullen returned to practice after missing several days because of a sore knee. LB Lance Laury (knee) and DT Michael Bennett (shoulder) sat out Thursday's workout. LT Walter Jones (back) and CB Marcus Trufant (PUP, back) did not practice.
Changes on Tapp: Seattle showed one of the first signs of new wrinkles on defense, using a nickel package with three down lineman -- including Cory Redding who moved inside to tackle -- and defensive end Darryl Tapp lining up without his hand down, faking a blitz, and dropping back to cover the tight end.
