Poll position: Fans narrowly favor addition of Michael Vick
Posted by Danny O'Neil
The poll was more an exercise to gauge the opinion of the fanbase because that is certainly going to be one of the factors any team interested in adding Vick must consider. He's a former No. 1 overall pick who has won two playoff games as a starting quarterback, but it's not just a question of whether Vick has the talent to warrant a spot on someone's roster. It's a question of whether he has enough talent to make a team willing to undergo the scrutiny that would result from signing Vick. So here's the result of the poll:
The other category allowed people to write in a reason, which received 152 votes. Eight of those votes were either duplicate votes or something that did not express a vote of yes or no. Of the 144 remaining write-ins, 108 opposed the signing of Vick. They were divided into two reasons: The Seahawks don't need him given the current roster (41 votes) or the fan did not want him because of the attention or distraction he would bring didn't warrant the addition of someone who may not fit the Seahawks' system (67 votes). The best of those write-in votes concluded with the statement: "I don't want ESPN camped here all season." That made me chuckle.
Of the 36 write-in yes votes, there were some 29 votes supportive with conditions (i.e. public service, no further trouble) and 7 votes who said he should be added, but not at a quarterback. Some wanted him as a running back. There was even one for a safety.
So the final tally was that of the 2,312 votes cast expressing an opinion on whether the Seahawks should sign Vick, 1,226 supported his addition (53 percent) and 1,087 were opposed (47 percent). That surprises me. Before the voting, I would have predicted that two-thirds of the respondents would be opposed.
