Cap and crunch
Posted by Danny O'Neil
The ESPN Insider has had an extremely cool feature this offseason from the Football Outsiders, featuring salary-cap analysis (or is it analyses since there was one treatise for each division?).
The analysis comes from J.I. Halsell, former cap analyst for the Washington Redskins. ESPN Insider is a premium portion of ESPN.com's site, but there is interesting and specific information that is provided there. Here's the link to the ESPN Insider analysis of the NFC West salary-cap situations.
The analysis states that Deion Branch is the player who must live up to his salary-cap number, which is listed as $7,546,240 for 2009. Branch should be ready for training camp. He missed 13 games over the past two seasons, and not only has ne never lived up to the $39 million contract Seattle signed him to, but the Seahawks gave up a first-round pick for the right to give him that contract.
But there was a sign of improvement over the course of last season. Take a look:
| Month | Receptions | Yards | Avg. rec. | Avg. game | TDs |
| Sept. | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Oct. | 3 | 31 | 10.3 | 31 | 0 |
| Nov. | 10 | 121 | 12.1 | 40.3 | 0 |
| Dec. | 17 | 260 | 15.3 | 65 | 4 |
Now, combine that with the general consensus that it's in the second year that a player fully recovers from knee surgery, and it should point to the possibility that Branch will be a consistent and productive receiver.
