Darnell Dockett's announces he won't hold out
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Before noon Monday, Darnell Dockett of the Arizona Cardinals said via his Twitter account that he would have a major announcement at 8:15 (presumably Eastern). Well, he made his major announcement, which is that "from the first day of training camp an on, I will not let me contract issues distract me." Here's a link to his Twitter page.
Hmmm. Interesting. An athlete under contract uses his Twitter page to state that he plans on honoring that contract from the first day he is contractually obligated to show up. Well, color me impressed.
Perhaps I should counter with an announcement of my own. Here's one: The difficulties that the newspaper industry faces in general will not impact my commitment to the coverage of the Seahawks from the first day of training camp on.
How about you? Do you have any announcements you would like to make?
The few times I've talked to Dockett -- most recently in Arizona's locker room after the Cardinals victory in Seattle last season -- he has been very responsive and totally engaged in the questions. And he has a legitimate beef about his contract. Dude is underpaid, but he's underpaid after he chose to renegotiate his deal a few years back. He's not playing on a rookie contract anymore, and pardon me if I don't jump on a bandwagon for applauding an athlete for adhering to the terms of a contract he himself agreed to. There are lots of examples of selflessness in this world. This, however, is not one of them.
