Courtney Taylor, Cory Redding among the missing

Defensive lineman Cory Redding returned to practice on Wednesday and returned to being an observer by the end of Wednesday morning's workout, watching with an ice bag on both knees. That's probably just to make sure the knee doesn't swell up after Wednesday's work. We'll see if he's on the field Friday.

Deion Branch stayed on the field, and Nate Burleson was again watching practice. Marcus Trufant, Courtney Taylor, Michael Bumpus, C.J. Wallace, D.D. Lewis, Walter Jones, Patrick Kerney and Brandon Miller did not practice. Miller and Bumpus worked out on what I call rehabilitation hill, which is the berm that borders the practice fields to the East.

CB Kelly Jennings continued to work in a limited role as he's returned from a shoulder injury. He suffered the injury making a tackle in the regular-season finale against Arizona, and he said that he's not quite 100 percent.

WR Deon Butler looked had a great practice in the morning. He worked his way behind cornerback Josh Wilson for one scoring reception in a passing drill and later in that same drill, leaped to make a diving reception behind cornerback Kevin Hobbs.

The best duel of the morning was between receiver Mike Hass and Hobbs. Hass made a great play to come back to the ball, outjumping Hobbs for a reception on a deep pass from Seneca Wallace. Later in the practice, Hobbs drove on an out-route by Hass, made a diving interception and then spun the ball in front of the offensive players watching from the sideline.

Rookie Max Unger worked some at center in the morning practice, but it appeared that was with the third unit. He remains working with the second-unit line at left guard.

DT Red Bryant drew some cheers from the defense for his penetration, which would have stopped one running play cold had this been a contact drill.
