Cards carrying another unhappy player: DT Darnell Dockett
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Well, the Good Ship Seahawk set sail toward the 2009 season this weekend with a three-day minicamp that included their most significant offseason acquisitions.
The Arizona Cardinals are trying to avoid a remake of "Mutiny on the Bounty."
OK. Enough with the bad maritime metaphors, but one of the biggest questions coming out of last season was whether the Cardinals -- a notoriously thrifty organization that treats nickels like manhole covers, i.e. not something to be thrown around -- would pony up the cash to reward the players who powered their run to the Super Bowl. So far the answer is a resounding, "Not really."
Quarerback Kurt Warner had to go visit division rival San Francisco before he re-signed with the Cardinals, receiver Anquan Boldin still doesn't have a new deal and now Mike Sando and John Clayton of ESPN.com are reporting that defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has reiterated a request to be traded.
This is the price of success in the National Football League. Seattle experienced it in 2006 after its Super Bowl run with the departures of receiver Joe Jurevicius, guard Steve Hutchinson and safety Marquan Manuel (remember him). Players who are part of a championship team command a premium in a league where imitation isn't the biggest form of flattery, acquisition is.
Throw in safety Adrian Wilson -- the hard-hitting heart of that defense -- who is in the last year of his contract and linebacker Karlos Dansby, who is in his second year as the Cardinals' franchise player and you've got a lot of people less than content with their contract situations.
[Special thanks to Gollum for grammatical encouragement.]
Take a look at this Associated Press story from the first day of the Cardinals' minicamp on Friday. Dockett and Boldin didn't play because of injuries and Dansby showed up late because of a miscommunication.
