MINNEAPOLIS — The roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis deflated early Sunday morning under the weight of the heaviest snowfall since 1991, forcing the NFL to move the game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants to Ford Field in Detroit, another domed stadium, on Monday night.
The Vikings are refunding the cost of the tickets for the game for fans who can't make it to Detroit. The Lions also will distribute free general admission tickets. The game will be broadcast in the teams' home markets and on the NFL's DirecTV's Sunday Ticket package.
The decision set off a multicity scramble.
The Giants, who had been stranded in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday night after their flight to Minneapolis was diverted because of the storm, hastily made plans to fly to Detroit. The Vikings did the same.
"It's like recreating a bad Christmas movie," Giants defensive lineman Justin Tuck said.
The game was originally scheduled to be played Sunday afternoon, but officials had already decided late Saturday night to delay the game until Monday night because of concerns that the snow on roof of the Metrodome could not safely be cleared by workers in high winds.
No one was reported injured.
