All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is holding out from the New York Jets' training camp because of a contract dispute | NFL
All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is holding out from training camp while locked in a contract dispute with the New York Jets.
CORTLAND, N.Y. — The New York Jets reported for training camp with high hopes — and without perhaps their best player.
All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, 25, is holding out while in a contract dispute with the team.
"Darrelle and his family were extremely deliberate with the decision-making process," agent Neil Schwartz told The Associated Press on Sunday. "Obviously his actions speak far louder than words."
Revis officially became a holdout when he missed the team's first meeting Sunday night. Revis reportedly will be fined $16,523 for each day he isn't with the team.
"The lines of communication are open and we remain committed to finding a solution that makes sense for him and makes sense for us," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.
Revis is to make $1 million in the fourth year of his six-year contract, making him one of the lowest-paid defensive backs on the Jets. He wants to be the league's highest-paid cornerback, a distinction that belongs to Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha, who signed a three-year, $45.3 million extension in February 2009.
Notes
• Running back Ryan Mathews of Fresno State signed a five-year, $25.65 million contract with San Diego, with slightly more than $15 million guaranteed. He was the 12th player drafted this year.
• New England receiver Wes Welker was removed from the physically unable to perform list and placed on the active roster, seven months after tearing ligaments in his knee. Welker practiced with the team Sunday.
• Albert Haynesworth's sore left knee again kept him from taking Washington's conditioning test, forcing the two-time All-Pro defensive tackle to sit out practice for the fourth day in a row.
• Baltimore placed cornerback Domonique Foxworth (torn knee ligament) on injured reserve, ending his season.
• Reality television star Kim Kardashian was at the Dallas Cowboys' practice in San Antonio, watching receiver Miles Austin — reportedly her boyfriend — from a private suite at the Alamodome. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he "almost swallowed" his sandwich earlier when he ran into Austin and Kardashian having lunch with Dallas quarterback Tony Romo.
Kardashian previously dated running back Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints.
