Chicago Bears hire Mike Martz as offensive coordinator | NFL

Mike Martz, the headstrong coach who orchestrated "The Greatest Show on Turf" while molding Kurt Warner into a Pro Bowl quarterback with the St. Louis Rams, is the Chicago Bears' new offensive coordinator.

CHICAGO — Mike Martz, the headstrong coach who orchestrated "The Greatest Show on Turf" while molding Kurt Warner into a Pro Bowl quarterback with the St. Louis Rams, is the Chicago Bears' new offensive coordinator.

Martz's hiring Monday ended a nearly monthlong search to replace the fired Ron Turner. Martz's job is to turn around a struggling offense and get the most out of Jay Cutler after the quarterback and team failed to meet expectations this season.

Cutler, acquired in a trade with Denver in April, threw a league-leading 26 passes that were intercepted. The Bears, who are coached by Lovie Smith, went 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

With Martz in his first year as offensive coordinator under Dick Vermeil, the 1999 Rams won the Super Bowl and produced the first of a record three consecutive 500-point seasons.

Martz, 58, replaced Vermeil as coach in 2000 and produced a 56-36 record in 5 ½ seasons, leading the 2001 team back to the Super Bowl. But while making a name for himself with the Rams, Martz became known for a confidence that bordered on arrogance and eventually was fired.

Martz spent this season as an NFL Network analyst.

Notes

• Hall of Fame cornerback Emmitt Thomas is returning to the Kansas City franchise as defensive-backs coach. Thomas, 66, previously was an Atlanta assistant coach.

Bruce DeHaven, 61, who coached Seahawks special teams for the last three seasons, is returning to Buffalo to coach the Bills' special teams — a job he had from 1987 to 1999.

LeAnne Novacek, 45, wife of ex-Dallas tight end Jay Novacek, was found dead in a Burleson, Texas, home after police responded to a call of a possible suicide.

• Sunday's Pro Bowl on ESPN was watched by an average of 12.3 million viewers, the most since 2000 and a 40 percent increase from last year's game on NBC — when it was played after the Super Bowl.
