Despite losing another offensive lineman, Seahawks rack up 379 yards
Kyle Williams became the fourth member of the team to play left tackle this season after Brandon Frye gets injured in the first quarter
Seattle Times staff reporter
Another game, another injured Seahawks offensive lineman or two.
This time offensive tackle Brandon Frye went down on the second play of the second series in the Seahawks' 41-0 dismantling of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
That's the same Brandon Frye who replaced Sean Locklear who had replaced Walter Jones.
And when Frye walked off with a left-shoulder stinger, the Seahawks turned to Kyle Williams. That's the same Kyle Williams who has spent most of the season on the practice squad, received about four to five snaps with the first-team offense last week and was activated to the 53-man roster Saturday.
"I didn't have time for emotions," Williams said. "I ran out there, then got set up and it was like let's go. I didn't really have time to think about anything."
The crowd of 67,228 at Qwest Field feared for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's safety because Williams was now in charge of protecting Hasselbeck's blind side. That's the same Hasselbeck who returned from a two-game layoff caused by two broken ribs.
"You try not to think about the extra stuff like that or put any more pressure on yourself because that just messes you up," Williams said. "You take it one play at a time. I was nervous and had jitters, but I'm thinking, do your job on this play. That's it."
Then things got really scary for the Seahawks when Williams sprained his knee on Olindo Mare's 47-yard field goal midway through the first half.
"The line just kind of caved in on my left knee and it kind of just locked [up] and I said, 'Great, here we go,' " Williams said. "Steve Vallos, you're going in at tackle. And Steve is our center. He's not the prototypical left tackle. He did play it in college. And then after that, we got to put in [defensive tackle] Red Bryant. We don't really have an emergency situation for that. Or they'd have to put [tight end John] Carlson at tackle."
Williams returned, finished the game and received praise from every corner of the locker room.
"Kyle has been in our program a long time. He really knows what he's doing," said Hasselbeck, who finished with 241 yards passing, four touchdowns and was sacked once. "I think guys have a lot of confidence in him."
The same might be said for Vallos, who replaced left guard Mansfield Wrotto when he suffered a right-ankle injury in the second quarter.

"It seems like every week, somebody else is hurt and somebody else is down," Vallos said. "I don't want to say we're getting used to it because you never want to get used to something like this, but when it happens you're not surprised."
With a makeshift offensive line, the Seahawks accounted for 379 yards, which included an 11 minute, 53 second possession in the fourth quarter to help close out the win. On the drive, Seattle ran on every play.
"More than anything else, that drive shows what we can do as an offensive line," center Chris Spencer said. "I'm proud of those guys for stepping up and coming in there like that. Kyle and Steve did a great job."
