Seahawks' Matt Hasselbeck has second cracked rib

Quarterback is expected to start Sunday's game against the Jaguars

Seattle Times staff reporter

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck suffered two fractured ribs in the goal-line hit in San Francisco.

That second injured rib was not diagnosed until nearly a week after Hasselbeck suffered the injury, and it won't affect his ability to play Sunday against Jacksonville. The presence of a second injured rib, however, does make it clear the obstacles Seattle's quarterback cleared to return three weeks after suffering the injury in San Francisco on Sept. 20.

Hasselbeck, 34, returned to practiced Wednesday and increased his workload with each day. He was listed as probable for Sunday's game, which means there's a virtual certainty he will start.

Hasselbeck missed the second half of Seattle's loss to the 49ers after suffering the rib injury. He was taken to Stanford where tests were unclear as to whether he suffered a fracture. Further tests taken the day after the game showed a rib was broken, but Hasselbeck still hoped he would be able to play in the next game.

His soreness did not decrease sufficiently that week, and further tests at the end of the week found a crack in another rib.
